Calais, Maine is at the U.S. border with Canada. Driving through the town I spotted this church with a wooden sign giving its name as First Baptist Church. It wasn’t clear if it’s still in use, but I found a history of a First Baptist Church in Calais in an excerpt of an old book online called “Annals of Calais”. According to it, the church organized in 1838 with eleven members. By 1834 they had built a first church which was later destroyed by fire in 1850. In 1852, they had rebuilt and dedicated the new building.
