The congregation of Carswell Grove Baptist Church, near Millen, Georgia, dates back to 1867. About a quarter of a mile down the road is Big Buckhead Baptist Church. After the Civil War, one of the wealthier landowners of Big Buckhead Baptist donated land to the black members of that church which led to their naming the new church after him. Race riots in the early 20th century led to the destruction of the first church and the one pictured here was then built in 1919. Over the subsequent decades the population dwindled and the building started to suffer from disrepair. Sadly, this church was destroyed by arson less than a year after this photo was taken.
