Bethel Baptist Institutional Church, founded in 1838, is the oldest Baptist congregation in Jacksonville, Florida.  Initially it was an interracial church until a dispute over which pastor to follow caused the church to split up with the white members starting First Baptist Church, now one of the largest in the U.S.  Bethel Baptist lost their building in Jacksonville’s Great Fire of 1901 and rebuilt with the current structure finished in 1904. The architecture is a combination of Greek Revival and Romanesque Revival styles.  Today, the silver steepled church has over 10,000 members.
